Custom Cherry Table and Refinished Chairs
Our son recently moved in to his own apartment and did not have a dining table and chairs yet. We found these chairs at a local antique mall and decided to refinish them for him and then build him a new table that will fit in to his apartment. In the pictures below, the wood board behind the chairs is the start of the table top which is from an old cherry tree that was cut down in Woodstock, VA.
While removing the old material on the seats (the ones with the circles), we discovered that the chairs had been reupholstered 5 or 6 times. We decided there was not sufficient wood fiber left to the seat bottoms after removing all of the old tacks so we used the pin router to make new seat bottoms. The old upholstery job did not have any cushioning so we added 2″ foam to the seat bottoms for comfort. Jeremy and his girlfriend love paisley which is why the paisley fabric was selected. The finish on the chairs was stripped and a custom blend of mahogany and mocha stain was applied to lighten the color. We wanted to keep the cherry table top with a natural cherry finish so the lighter coloring on the chairs would blend a little better.
The solid cherry table is 49 x 36 x 30. The drawer in the side allows you to keep extra eating utensils and napkins close at hand. The table was finished with four coats of polyurethane. The table top was hand rubbed with pumice and rottenstone and then a couple coats of paste wax.
